Faster, more comfortable and (often) cheaper: why you should take the Eurostar on your next trip to Europe
Passenger numbers on Eurostar have bounced back since the pandemic, with record numbers now taking the train to Europe.
For those travelling between London and Paris, Eurostar continues to be the preferred option: 2 million people flew between the capitals in 2024, compared to 8 million people taking the Eurostar.
Its slightly more balanced for Brussels, with 1 million flying compared to 2.2 million taking the Eurostar, and roughly equal numbers travelling between Amsterdam and London.
But, with increasing interest from competing train providers to connect London with Europe, prices will drop, new destinations open, and passenger numbers increase.
Here’s our top reasons why you should consider getting the train the next time you go to Europe.
1. Speed and convenience
Eurostar is often discounted because it takes longer than flying – which is true: flying typically takes 1 hour and 20 minutes from London to Paris, compared to 2 hours and 30 minutes by Eurostar.
But, when you factor in the time saved before and after your flight, getting the train is far quicker.
Airports in London and Paris are at least an hour’s train travel outside of each city, compared to being in the city centre when getting the train.
Security, passport control and customs are far quicker, with shorter queues and generally less walking (compare St Pancras to Heathrow, which is the size of a small city and employs a similar number of people (it even uses the same amount of electricity as a city)).
Then, there’s far less waiting for your train. We try and get there 30 minutes before our train, compared to 1.5 hours before a flight.
And, there’s no passport control, customs, or baggage reclaim at your destination. Just walk out the train station into the city.

2. Relax and enjoy the ride
Forget about tiny seats and fighting for elbow room. Eurostar gives you space to stretch out and move around.
Stare at the countryside out of the large windows, take a wander to the café carriage, or watch a movie using data or the free wifi (with plug sockets!).
No turbulence, no constant seatbelt signs, and no airport madness.
3. Go green
Trains have a much smaller carbon footprint compared to flying.
Eurostar emits 2kg of carbon dioxide per person, compared to 61.5kg when flying – that’s 97% lower.
Factor in the associated carbon emissions – getting to the airport, running a huge airport (Heathrow uses the same amount of electricity as around 500,00 households) – and Eurostar comes out as far more economically friendly.
4. Pack what you want (almost)
There are no liquid restrictions on Eurostar, so you’re free to bring with you what you like.
This of course means you can bring back what you like – bottles of French wine or olive oil?
The baggage allowance is also super generous. You’re allowed 3 pieces of luggage, up to 85cm long. A certain yellow and blue airline would faint at the thought.
5. Travel smart, save money
Book in advance, and you can snag some great deals on Eurostar tickets. It’s often cheaper than flying, especially when you factor in all those extra airline fees.
And there are no hidden charges for checked bags or picking your seat. What you see is what you get.
Railcards and frequent traveller discounts can also save you some serious cash. It’s worth looking into if you travel often.
6. Views, views, views
Instead of staring at clouds, you get to watch the countryside roll by. It’s so much more interesting.
The London to the South of France route is especially stunning. Vineyards, rolling hills, and charming villages: it’s like a free scenic tour.

7. Say goodbye to border queues
Passport control is done before you even get on the train. That means when you arrive, you can just walk straight out and start exploring.
No more waiting in long lines at customs like at airports. It’s such a time-saver.
8. Perfect for a quick getaway
Eurostar is fast enough for a day trip or a weekend in Paris, Brussels, or Lille – and beyond.
You don’t waste time at airports. This means you get more time to explore.
You can even do an extreme day trip – although as advocates of slow travel, this isn’t something we’d normally encourage.
9. Europe is at your fingertips
Eurostar connects to high-speed trains that can take you to other major cities like Marseille, Leon, and Cologne.
You can easily travel to Italy, Switzerland, and Spain by rail. The possibilities are endless.
10. Travel in style
There’s just something romantic and nostalgic about train travel. It’s a much more enjoyable way to travel.
The café onboard serves snacks and drinks. Perfect for a mid-journey pick-me-up.
Watch the countryside role by with a glass of red (of course this wouldn’t be right on a morning journey – so get a prosecco instead).
If you’re feeling fancy, upgrade to Premier. You get lounge access and gourmet meals. Treat yourself!
